Every first Monday of May, people from across the globe travel to New York City to attend the world’s most important social event of the year — The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala — from high society’s beloved philanthropists to the world’s most celebrated entertainers, you name it! The gala is a major fundraising benefit that serves as an opening festivity for the institute’s annual exhibition. Every year, the elaborate & invite only gala is chaired by Vogue’s lifelong editor in chief, Anna Wintour. This year, the evening was co-chaired by music entertainers Katy Perry & Pharrell Williams, too.
This year’s honorary exhibition theme is dedicated to Comme des Garçons & its legendary founder Rei Kawakubo. Last evening’s red carpet was invaded by a parade of avant-garde fashions in honor of the unconventional fashion house. From Anna Cleveland to Stella Tennant, the love for Comme was strong!
To cap off from last night’s glamorous affair, we have provided you with our top three favorite red carpet looks — from Rihanna to Maxwell. Rei didn’t look so bad herself! Always dashingly avant-garde!
- ” My absolute favorite look of the evening was Rihanna in Comme des Garçons! It truly looked like she was wearing a piece of art from head to toe.” – Ana Cintrón, Special Projects Coordinator
- ” I was really struck by Kim Kardashian’s effortless look in Vivienne Westwood. She definitely had a natural glow that successfully complimented her gown.” – Tarralyn Jones, CEO & Founder
- ” I definitely vote Maxwell as best dressed for men! The Comme-inspired ensemble designed by the duo of dsquared2 was a major hit! Not many guys could pull off this look! Not only was it unconventional, but very sharp, too! ” – Brian Jones, Director of Communications & Special Projects
